Product knowledge 101

Alright Ladies - here is some basic knowledge when shopping for skin care products.

I get clients all the time who want to use good products on their skin but can't afford the "professional stuff." So I get asked, "what can I get at the drugstore that is similar?"

Well, honestly....nothing

The reason those Professional products are so much pricier is because the ingredients are superior (and much better for your skin) and so they cost more to make.

But you can breath easy...I have some great info. that will help you navigate your way through those scary ingredient labels.

Here is a simple concept to remember:

If it sounds edible - It's good for your skin

Example: grapeseed, sunflower, Avacado, safflower, hemp seed, & olive oils etc

If it sounds like it should be used in your car's engine - It should be avoided!

Example: petroleum and petrolatum (a derivative of petroleum) oils, mineral oil, & anything else that sounds very chemicalish and you can't pronounce it.

Now here is the tricky part.....It is very hard to find a lotion or beauty product in say a wal-mart or CVS with out either mineral or petrolatum oils. Why?

Well, because they are cheap to come by and are great lubricants. But they do nothing beneficial for your skin. In fact just the opposite, they seal the skin and impair the normal "breathing" function of it.

Considering the fact that our skin is the largest organ of our bodies, it is pretty important that it be allowed to breath so it can function properly.

But to a big corporation, their bottom line is not the health of your skin - It's making the most profit! And of course that means spending as little as possible in manufacturing the product.

So, I do have some recommendations on brand names.

These are my picks for not breaking the bank or your skin!!
  • Phisoderm

  • Cetaphyl

  • Burt's bees

There are other's out there at places like Clark's and Trader Joe's. Just remember the ingredient rule above.

I'd love to hear about products you've found/used that you like and are healthy for your skin. Leave a comment so we can all benefit from your knowledge too!!
